Stromasys adds Internet capability to the geological and soil databases of the Geological Survey of Lower Saxony (NLfB) and the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR).

Stromasys signed an agreement with the "Geological Survey of Lower Saxony" in Hannover, Germany to implement the Internet capability of their Method Management System (MeMaS). The NLfB is a government funded institute under the authority of the Ministry of Economics, Technology and Transport of the state of Lower Saxony. The mission of the NLfB is the collection and distribution of geological and soil information. The NLfB regards MeMaS as one the strategic cornerstones in doing so.

MeMaS is used to provide access to large databases providing detailed information about the soils and geology and also integrates a large set of data evaluation methods. The generic, component based and extendable MeMaS system makes specialized information like maps available to scientists, business, public sector and citizens.

The development of this complex system was started in 1990 with the technical support of Digital Equipment GmbH in Stuttgart, later taken over by Compaq Computer GmbH, on behalf of whom Stromasys has provided the development and maintenance services. Prior to signing the new agreement, Stromasys developed a detailed requirement specification and a prototype to demonstrate the functionality of the Internet enabled database.

The first project step will be the modification of the MeMaS kernel to add the new internet functionality without compromising the actual functionality or performance, which will be completed in March 2001. Extension of the application level will follow with the goal to have the complete internet service available by the end of 2001.

Stromasys specializes in helping companies to preserve their legacy software investments by providing re-engineering and porting services as well as emulation products. Its expertise also covers process control systems and tools to execute PDP-11 and VAX binary code in software on modern hardware. The company purchased in December 1998 the assets and customer base of a former Digital European software migration center from Compaq Computer Corporation. Stromasys is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, and has sales offices in the Benelux, France, Germany, Sweden, and North America.
