today announced the new generation of
its VAX emulators. The CHARON-VAX family of
products are software products running on
modern Windows or Alpha systems and emulating
the legendary VAX computers of Digital Equipment
Corporation (DEC, now HPQ). The virtual VAX
created by CHARON-VAX permits the installation
of any VAX operating system, like VAX/VMS,
and the execution of the binary user application
without any modification or recompilation.
This allows the user to replace his old hardware
immediately by modern hardware, significantly
reducing maintenance cost, and preserving
current investments in applications and staff.
In addition, CHARON-VAX enables the user to
extend his application on the modern platform
while increasing the application performance
significantly.
The new generation CHARON-VAX
products announced emulate the VAX 3198
CPU. Depending on the host systems
configuration, the top of the family product
CHARON-VAX/XL Plus for Windows can provide
a performance of 50 VUPs or more (VUP =
VAX Units of Performance) and thus replace
the fastest single CPU VAX ever built by
DEC, the VAX 7000 model 710. The virtual
VAXes created using CHARON-VAX are clusterable
like any real VAX, and can emulate memory
sizes up to 512 MB. The products will be
demonstrated in the Orbit Comdex tradeshow
in Basel during September 24-27th, 2002
