Stromasys adds VAXserver 3600 model to emulator

Stromasys announces the immediate availability of the VAXserver 3500/3600 model in its CHARON-VAX MicroVAX hardware emulator. This emulator model supports the 64 Megabyte memory management unit of the VAX 3600, increasing the available emulated memory by four times, improving systems throughput and accommodating large VAX applications..

CHARON-VAX was introduced in August 2000 as the world's first software package that emulates a complete MicroVAX system - including disks, tapes, serial lines and Ethernet controllers. The emulator runs existing and unmodified VAX software applications and operating systems like VAX/VMS on a new platform. CHARON-VAX is specifically designed to move applications from MicroVAX II, VAX 3000 and entry-level VAX 4000 systems to newer generations of systems without any conversion effort.

Miller Donaldson, the product manager for the CHARON emulator products, said: "With this extension of CHARON-VAX emulator the system throughput is significantly increased for applications that require a larger emulated memory structure, like Pathworks or DECWindows. With the ever increasing capacity of the Windows platform, the CHARON-VAX emulator in 3600 mode on a 1.5 GHz Pentium IV ® based system can replace a 10 - 15 VUPs departmental VAX server. When used with an Xterminal or Xterminal emulator connected via Ethernet, DECWindows graphic performance is comparable to a VAX 4000-300"

The VAX3500/3600 CPU model is available at no extra cost in the currently shipping full function CHARON-VAX emulator products for Windows NT4/2000 and OpenVMS/Alpha.

Stromasys specializes in helping companies to preserve their legacy software investments by providing re-engineering and porting services in addition to emulation products. Its expertise also covers process control systems and tools to execute PDP-11 and VAX binary code in software on modern hardware. In December 1998 the company purchased the assets and customer base of a former Digital European software migration center from Compaq Computer Corporation. Stromasys is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, and has sales offices in the Benelux, France, Germany, Sweden, and North America.
