Stromasys announces availability of its PDP-11 system emulator for Windows®2000. PDP-11 Code runs faster on Windows 2000 than on any hardware PDP-11 CHARON-11, the industrial-strength PDP-11 system emulator of Stromasys is now available for the Windows®2000 platform. CHARON-11 is specifically designed to prolong the use of critical industrial control applications running on PDP-11 systems, which could not yet be replaced due to their complexity, real-time requirements or direct connections to process control equipment.
CHARON-11 creates a complete 'virtual' PDP-11 system, capable to run existing binary PDP-11 code, operating systems, device drivers and applications without any modification or re-compilation. Based on an original design by Digital Equipment Corporation, CHARON-11 has been available for 5 years on Windows NT4, Tru64UNIX and OpenVMS/Alpha. Installation only requires copying the existing PDP-11 software and reconnecting the serial line connections. Existing PDP-11 peripherals can be directly supported with CHARON-11 by using a UNI/Qbus adapter with the original driver software.
CHARON-11 provides a very significant cost saving over migrating the PDP-11 application code to a new system, as no code conversion is required. The PDP-11 can be replaced in one day by a PC platform with much lower cost of ownership. The system performance increases significantly, as a 1 GHz PC with CHARON-11 provides up to 10 times the performance of the PDP-11/93, the fastest PDP-11 ever built.
Today, many CHARON-11 installations are being used for controlling steel mills, refineries and power generation and distribution systems. They replace embedded PDP-11 systems while retaining the existing expensive process control peripherals. The Windows®2000 release of CHARON-11 is available immediately.
Stromasys specializes in helping companies to preserve their software investments by providing re-engineering and porting services in addition to emulation products. Its expertise also covers process control systems and tools to execute PDP-11 and VAX binary code in software on modern hardware. Stromasys is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, and has offices in the Benelux, France, Germany, Sweden, and North America.
