LinkWorks to Exchange Migration Services

Software Resources International (SRI) provides services to migrate existing solutions based on Compaq LinkWorks to Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server environment. The services include:

  • Feasibility analysis
  • Migration of the existing administrative structure of the LinkWorks domain (organizational units, users etc.) to Windows 2000 / Exchange 2000 Active Directory objects.
  • Transferring existing objects from LinkWorks information stores (cells) to user mailboxes and public folders, including the object's properties and security settings.
  • Migration of existing customer's applications created in the LinkWorks environment using CPL and/or Script Language programming to native Exchange 2000 programming environment.
  • Turnkey solutions including on-site delivery and project management.

Migration of application environment

One of most important tasks to be done in the migration of any information system is the migration of data from source software/hardware platform to the target one. Not only the data transfer is important, but also the reestablishment of the existing administrative structures and the transfer of the access rights and of other object attributes to the target system.
To solve these problems SRI created a set of special tools to:

  • Analyze the application environment of source solution: The administrative structure, the object classes used in the existing solution, the hierarchy of public/private compounds etc.
  • Transfer of accounts, organizational units, roles, address lists etc. to Windows 2000 / Exchange 2000 Active Directory objects. Accounts (logins) are transferred to Windows 2000 users; organizational units are transferred to security groups. Information about the correspondence between LinkWorks and Active Directory objects is used later in document transferring operations to determine the security settings on the target system.
  • Transfer the existing documents from the LinkWorks information storage to Expeditor 2000 public folders or mailboxes. The security settings ofthe objects in LinkWorks are transferred to corresponding folder/item/property ACLs in Exchange 2000, using information saved during administrative structure transfer.
  • Convert a workflow of objects stored in LinkWorks to data structures and methods for the Exchange 2000 Workflow Engine. The converted workflow can later be edited by the Workflow Designer for Exchange.

Migration of the application code

Because of different object model used in Compaq LinkWorks and Microsoft Exchange 2000, the migration of application code implies partial reengineering of the existing design and its re-implementation using the native Exchange 2000 programming environment.

To simplify this process, SRI created tools to analyze existing software components, to extract information from the source system in a defined format and to convert as much as possible CPL code to corresponding scripts to for use in Microsoft Exchange.

SRI has also many standard solution templates to migrate typical customers of different classes (like Correspondence and Records Management, Report Tracking, Document Collaboration within a Team), which can be used/extended in the migration of specific projects.
